The Vein Center for Women was started by combining the knowledge in venous diseases and a personal interest in women’s health. The mission statement of the vein center is “Beauty inside out” as we believe that if ones inner health is good, the beauty would naturally be seen and that is exactly what we try to treat each patient with. To this purpose, the center follows a protocol in evaluating its patients as a whole, giving them information, education and assistance in achieving “Total health”.
Here we solve some of the most frequent questions our patients have
Spider veins are bundles of small red or blue veins near the surface of the skin. Spider veins are an uncomfortable condition found in millions of adult women.
Sclerotherapy involves placing a tiny needle with with different solutions into the affected spider veins. We use polidocanol specifically for spider vein treatments. Polidocanol has been used for more than 20 years in Europe and has been approved by the FDA since 2010. The spider veins then gradually absorb and disappear.
Varicose veins are swollen, twisted, blue veins that are close to the surface of the skin. Because valves in them are damaged, they hold more blood at higher pressure than normal. That forces fluid into the surrounding tissue, making the affected leg swell and feel heavy.
Unsightly and uncomfortable, varicose veins can promote swelling in the ankles and feet and itching of the skin. They may occur in almost any part of the leg but are most often seen in the back of the calf or on the inside of the leg between the groin and the ankle. Left untreated, patient symptoms are likely to worsen with some possibly leading to venous ulceration.
The normal function of leg veins - both the deep veins in the leg and the superficial veins - is to carry blood back to the heart. During walking, for instance, the calf muscle acts as a pump, contracting veins and forcing blood back to the heart. To prevent blood from flowing in the wrong direction, veins have numerous valves. If the valves fail (a cause of venous reflux), blood flows back into superficial veins and back down the leg. This results in veins enlarging and becoming varicose.
Gravity is the reason. The distance from the feet to the heart is the furthest blood has to travel in the body. Consequently, those vessels experience a great deal of pressure. If vein valves can't handle it, the back flow of blood can cause the surface veins to become swollen and distorted.
It is sometimes genetics, obesity, pregnancy, hormonal changes at menopause, work or hobbies requiring extended standing, vein diseases such as thrombophlebitis (i.e inflammation of a vein as a blood clot forms). Women suffer more then men.
Many insurance companies are paying for the procedure in part or in full. Most insurance companies determine coverage for all treatments, based on medical necessity. Our qualified staff always helps in getting approval from the insurances and will discuss the treatment plan before the procedure if not covered.
Sclerotherapy is an effective, non-surgical treatment for unsightly spider and varicose veins. Surgical vein stripping often requires hospitalization and weeks of recovery. In contrast, sclerotherapy patients are encouraged to return to their normal activities immediately after treatment.
Generally patients report little to no pain. There may be a slight warming or stinging sensation, which quickly dissipates. For this reason, anesthesia is rarely required.
Although recovery from vein treatment varies from patient to patient, there typically is no downtime. Patients can resume normal activities almost immediately. Minor bruising or swelling may occur, but should gradually fade within a week or two.
DVT stands for Deep Vein Thrombosis. A DVT is a blood clot in a vein which lies deep inside a muscle. It usually occurs in a vein in the calf muscle. This is a serious medical condition that requires immediate attention. A DVT can be very serious and requires blood thinners.
I am sorry to say that varicose veins tend to run in families, so most likely you will get them too.
Your treated veins will not come back. When treated properly by an expert with vast experience , your veins will not come back.
That is not necessary. Your veins will only get worse before your next pregnancy and it will take much longer to get rid of them afterwards. The sooner they are treated the less time it will take to get your legs looking and feeling great again.
No heavy exercise after the first couple of weeks.
